It was nice observation about selfish gene.
You mentioned about "it worked once" that it may result into self inflicted damage. I agree but the person who is taking the advice has to try it atleast once to understand the result or take another path / startegy which in itself can be first time.
Here I am trying to understand and want to be careful while passing on my knowledge / heuristic to my subordinates and not put them / project / organization in a damaging situation :)
Anyway topic has made me to think.
